Since NOW Australia’s launch on 25 March 2018, we have been conscious that many of us on the Board, as well a large number of our founding members, enjoy a position of white privilege. More importantly, our experience of sexual harassment in the workplace is dwarfed by the horrors endured by our siblings in the CALD community, the LGBTI community, the Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal communities and those with access issues.
For that reason, the Board’s first task was to hire an interim Executive Director to consult widely with the sector to identify how NOW Australia could best add value and help achieve our mission of ending sexual harassment in the workplace. Between May and December 2018, the interim Executive Director consulted with more than 60 key stakeholders and experts in the women’s services and legal services sectors, including the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), the Department of Social Services (DSS), 1800Respect, Australian Women Against Violence and Justice Connect.
Those consultations have reinforced the need for NOW Australia to be a trauma-informed organisation. The unanimous response from the sector was that the triage service must be government-
funded given the scale and significance of the problem and that NOW Australia would help most by doing what we do best – amplifying, spotlighting and advocating.

Our expenses since our launch on 25 March 2019 have primarily been:
- The cost of establishing NOW Australia
- Ensuring the necessary insurances are in place
- A salary for the part-time Executive Director
